Louros Figure in the British Museum
Preface

The fascinating nature of the human being, the simplicity and complexity of the diverse attributes of spirit, language and form has been the focus of my work for a number of years. Certain elements contained within the realm of the art style known as twentieth century minimalism have also impacted on the way my ceramic forms have developed and been realised. In addition, as a result of my interest in modern artists such as Brancusi and one of this centuries better known ceramic artists, Hans Coper, I have become captivated by the figurative sculpture from the ancient civilisation of the Cyclades. The marble carvings from this period have a simplicity that tempts the viewer to seek their deeper and more complex structure.

This is a continuing personal investigation into the unique figurative sculpture from the early Bronze Age. This research has widened the visual and intellectual references that inform my work. In conjunction with my longer term interest in minimalism, it has been a valuable resource in the development of my studio practice. This research paper provides the opportunity to explore, develop and discuss relationships between the two art forms.continue to introduction...
